Scotch College Dining Hall, Hawthorn

Scotch College Dining Hall, Hawthorn

The Keon-Cohen building is one of the oldest structures on the Scotch College campus. The recent refurbishment and extension of the building has created a new hub for students and teachers to gather, eat and share ideas and conversations.

Originally a gymnasium, the building had become crowded out by later developments. The renovation involved paring the building back to reveal its former structure and aesthetics, and adding carefully selected materials to create a functional and beautiful refectory.

Designers were careful to ensure that the finished project provided a link to the school's strong Scottish heritage. Rich natural stone was cut from the quarries of Scotland and set alongside items of bronze, copper and terracotta, complemented by classic timber windows. The original brickwork was repointed, giving a refined and updated look to the facade.

New Heritage-Style Timber Windows

Cedar West was appointed to provide the new timber windows for the project. We worked closely with the builders to ensure that the design of the windows complemented the original heritage detailing of the building.

The old weight-and-cord style sash windows were upgraded to Cedar West's advanced double-hung window system, which includes tilt-and-remove sashes and integrated brush seals for improved noise and thermal control.

The new timber windows feature rounded horn profiles, thick heritage sills, timber glazing bars, simple latches and Georgian detailing. Specialist tooling was required to ensure the integrity of the design was retained.

The joinery used for this project includes:

Double-hung windows with timber glazing bars
Louvre windows
* Elegant fixed window with delicate timber bars

The project was designed by Cox Architects and built by Hutchinson Builders, and features customised solid timber windows by Cedar West.
